Spire Puts Siri on Your Jailbroken iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch (Legally!) [Jailbreak]

Spire Puts Siri on Your Jailbroken iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch (Legally!)Along with the news of an untethered jailbreak came the ability to install Siri on any jailbroken iDevice running iOS 5.0.1 thanks to a handy installer called Spire. Of course, installing Siri is the easy part. Getting it to work is another story entirely.

Actually, installing it may not be the easy part at the moment. We've been trying for most of the day but can't get the BigBoss repository to load in Cydia or even manually install using Spire .deb package file (which you can download here). As a result, we haven't been able to test Siri on our older iDevices but can tell you a little bit about what you can expect if you're able to load the repository on your jailbroken iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Basically, you're going to use Spire to download Siri onto your device. The installer app is small, but what it will download is not. It'll take up about 100MB of space so you might want to have a Wi-Fi connection when you're initiating the process. Once the install has finished, you'll need to reboot. (In some cases, you may need to perform a tethered boot so be prepared for this.) All of that is the easy part. It gets more complicated when you have to help Siri connect to Apple's servers. If Siri is not on an iPhone 4S, it knows and won't succeed in getting any response from Apple. As a result, you need to use a proxy and have access to an iPhone 4S. This means grabbing SiriProxy and setting it up to use an iPhone 4S' authentication tokens. (More details here.)

At the moment this process is kind of a pain in the butt. As chpwn points out (he's one of the developers), we'll likely see some pay services and alternative servers to use with Siri in the near future. For now we suggest waiting until using Siri isn't such a hassle and you don't have to rely on someone else's iPhone to make it work.

Sudan army kills leader of main Darfur rebel group (AP)

KHARTOUM, Sudan ? The Sudanese army said Sunday that it killed the leader of the main Darfur rebel group in fighting earlier this week, touting his death as a key victory against a powerful rebel force that once threatened Sudan's capital.

Khalil Ibrahim led the Darfur-based Justice and Equality Movement, or JEM, the most organized and effective military force in Darfur, the western region torn by conflict since 2003. The group did not join a peace deal signed last year in Doha, Qatar between other Darfur rebel groups and Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir's government in Khartoum.

The military said he was wounded Thursday during a military offensive in North Kordofan state, which borders Darfur. The government said he died of his wounds Saturday and that rebels quickly buried him. The government did not say how it confirmed his death.

JEM representatives could not immediately be reached for comment. If Ibrahim's death is confirmed by the group, it would be a serious blow to JEM, which has on several occasions threatened to bring down al-Bashir's regime in Khartoum by advancing toward the capital.

Sudanese Information Minister Abdullah Massar said Ibrahim's death sends a message to rebel groups "to listen to the voice of wisdom and join the peace process."

"Our doors are open and the Doha agreement is open," Massar said Sunday.

Darfur has been in turmoil since 2003, when ethnic African rebels accusing the Arab-dominated Sudanese government of discrimination took up arms against it. The Khartoum government is accused of retaliating by unleashing Arab militias on civilians ? a charge the government denies.

The conflict has tapered off since 2009, but the U.N. estimates 300,000 people died and 2.7 million have been displaced. The International Criminal Court in the Hague has issued an international arrest warrant for al-Bashir for his alleged role in crimes against humanity in Darfur.

Sudan's Information Minister told reporters Sunday that 30 people were killed with Ibrahim in the clashes. An army statement carried by Sudan's official SUNA news agency said Ibrahim and several associates were killed in Wad Banda, about 440 miles (700 kilometers) west of Khartoum in the North Kordofan region, which borders Darfur.

"The army cut all paths for the group as it was retreating and trying to cross into South Sudan to reorganize it forces," said Sudanese army spokesman Col. Sawarmy Khaled. "Our gallant armed forces were able to kill rebel Khalil Ibrahim along with some of his associates."

South Sudan seceded from the north in July to become the world's newest nation.

Fighting in Wad Banda had flared up in the past few days. On Saturday, the Sudanese army said Darfur rebels attacked three locations in neighboring North Kordofan, killing an unspecified number of civilians.

JEM has not claimed responsibility for the attack. However, in a dramatic push in 2008, hundreds of JEM fighters drove through the remote western region and attacked Khartoum's western outskirts. More recently, JEM spread its armed presence from Darfur into North Kordofan.

A security officer with the United Nations Mission in Darfur told The Associated Press that JEM mostly operates out of North Kordofan state and no longer has an official presence in Darfur. He said UNAMID officials have not confirmed Ibrahim's death. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.

This year, UNAMID had nearly 26,000 troops and police stationed in Darfur, making it the largest UN peacekeeping operation.

Salma Turabi, daughter of longtime opposition leader Hassan Turabi, said she was at a gathering of mourners at Ibrahim's home in Khartoum when police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Sudan state television broadcast images of Khartoum residents outside military headquarters, waving Sudanese flags and celebrating the news of his death.

Ibrahim is believed to have recently returned to Sudan after years in exile in neighboring Libya, where he enjoyed the patronage of Moammar Gadhafi before the longtime Libyan dictator was ousted and killed in October. Sudanese officials said the JEM has been trying to regroup since losing Gadhafi's reported support for the rebel movement.

Ibrahim once served in al-Bashir's government before joining the rebellion. He refused to join a peace agreement signed in Qatar and backed by the African Union that was meant to provide a basis for a cease-fire, power sharing, equal distribution of wealth and compensation for displaced people.

"He completely refused to come to the negotiating table, he never joined the peace talks," Ismail el-Haj Musa, Sudanese deputy speaker of the council of states, told the pan-Arab Al-Jazeera TV on Sunday. "He committed acts against the state."

On Sunday, Ibrahim Mahmoud Hamad, Sudan's interior minister, described the death of Ibrahim "as a message to all rebels and those carrying arms, calling on them to the negotiating table to resolve issues and reach a peaceful resolution for the best interest of the country," according the semiofficial Sudan Media Center.

HBT: Winter League suspends Torrealba 66 games

While playing in the Venezuelan winter league last week Rangers catcher Yorvit Torrealba attacked the home plate umpire following a strikeout, screaming in his face and then shoving his head.

You can see the incident for yourself in this video.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said yesterday that the team was looking into the situation, but in the meantime the Venezuelan winter league has suspended Torrealba for 66 games, which amounts to the rest of this winter league season and all of next season.

Torrealba, who?s under contract with the Rangers for $3.25 million in 2012, could still face further discipline from MLB.

Ancient seal found in Jerusalem linked to ritual (AP)

JERUSALEM ? A rare clay seal found under Jerusalem's Old City appears to be linked to religious rituals practiced at the Jewish Temple 2,000 years ago, Israeli archaeologists said Sunday.

The coin-sized seal found near the Jewish holy site at the Western Wall bears two Aramaic words meaning "pure for God."

Archaeologist Ronny Reich of Haifa University said it dates from between the 1st century B.C. to 70 A.D. ? the year Roman forces put down a Jewish revolt and destroyed the second of the two biblical temples in Jerusalem.

The find marks the first discovery of a written seal from that period of Jerusalem's history, and appeared to be a unique physical artifact from ritual practice in the Temple, said Reich, co-director of the excavation.

Very few artifacts linked to the Temples have been discovered so far. The site of the Temple itself ? the enclosure known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary ? remains off-limits to archaeologists because of its religious and political sensitivity.

Archaeologists say the seal was likely used by Temple officials approving an object for ritual use ? oil, perhaps, or an animal intended for sacrifice. Materials used by Temple priests had to meet stringent purity guidelines stipulated in detail in the Jewish legal text known as the Mishna, which also mention the use of seals as tokens by pilgrims.

The find, Reich said, is "the first time an indication was brought by archaeology about activities in the Temple Mount ? the religious activities of buying and offering and giving to the Temple itself."

The site where the seal was found is on the route of a main street that ran through ancient Jerusalem just outside the Temple compound.

Aren Maeir of Bar-Ilan University, a biblical archaeologist not connected to the dig, said the seal was special because it "was found right next to the Temple and is similar to what we see described in the Mishna."

"It's nice when we can connect an activity recorded in ancient sources with archaeological finds," he said.

The seal was found in an excavation run by archaeologists from the government's Israel Antiquities Authority. The dig is under the auspices of a broader dig nearby known as the City of David, where archaeologists are investigating the oldest part of Jerusalem.

The City of David dig, located inside the nearby Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan and funded by a Jewish group affiliated with the settlement movement, is the Holy Land's highest-profile and most politically controversial excavation.

Stress-Free Holidays for Pets | Care2 Healthy Living

The holidays have arrived, and if you are one of the fortunate ones with friends and family that you like to spend time with, the holidays mean parties, dinners, gift exchanges and get-togethers. Whether you will be the host of one of these fetes, or whether you?ll be packing up the family and pet for a cross-town trip to visit family and/or friends, know before you go how you are going to keep everyone calm and comfortable, so that?everyone has a good time.

Visiting ? Visitors

If you are the ?visitee,? you will want to do a little preparation before the guests arrive. Many of us consider our pets to be members of the family, and we enjoy having them with us in as we celebrate good times. But, when our pets are not used to have more than a few people around, they can get overly excited, and things can stop being fun. The jumping, the grabbing food from hands and tables, the barking ? all of these things can lead to some embarrassing situations, and can even frighten some guests who are not accustomed to having animals around. In the weeks before the event, take some time to work on your pet?s manners and reinforce obedience training. You might try some small gatherings with some pet friendly people who can help you to reinforce your pet?s manners, so that when the bigger party night comes, your pet will already be prepared.

If, on the other hand, you know that your pet will not be able to hold back his exuberance, set aside a safe room where he can stay for the duration of the event. Make the space comfortable with a bed or rug, water, toys, and maybe some treats. Close this area off to the guests so that you can be sure that your pet, and your guests, are safe. Remember to either tell your guests that your pet should be left alone, tape a sign to the door saying ?do not open,? or place a hook and eye lock on the door so that people know that it is not to be opened. The last thing you want is for a very excited pet to dash through the house, and possibly out the door to the outside of the house.

Naked Trading: A Robbie Burns Inspired Quant Investing Screen

In Brief

This is a?mixed-criteria GARP screen inspired by the enjoyable best-seller by Robbie Burns, quot; The Naked Trader: How Anyone Can Make Money Trading Sharesquot;. His approach combines a focus on fundamentals:

quot;My investment strategy has always been quite simple: find excellent companies and hold them until the value comes outquot;.

While he does appear to use a fair amount of technical analysis in order to time the entry, he appears sceptical about pure TA:

quot;I strongly believe charts are very important to look at.. but I also believe it?s simply crazy to buy and sell shares on the basis of looking at a chart and nothing else at allquot;.

?In the book, Robbie seems to ally himself most closely to the investor type that he calls the Medium Term Trader, i.e. an investor that buys and holds shares for:

quot;anything between 3 months and 2 years, does some careful research, sticks to stop losses, takes profits when it?s sensible to do so? amp; prefers smaller companies (with growth prospects) to FTSE 100 onesquot;.

Background?

Robbie Burns is a journalist and writer. Formerly working with BSkyB, ITV, Channel 4, he left full-time work in 2001 to trade and run his own businesses. While at BSkyB, Robbie broadcast a diary of his share trades which became his website, www.nakedtrader.co.uk. He published the first edition of the Naked Trader in 2005, following up with the third edition in September 2011. As Alistair Blair of the Investors Chronicle notes, quot; The Naked Trader by Robbie Burns sounds awfully like one of those ?How anyone can make money trading shares? books that wouldn?t get a mention in this column. It really does say exactly that on the cover. But hey ? to ignore the fact that this promise sells books would be very naive. It?s what?s inside that countsquot;.

The book does cover a lot of very useful material, including an excellent chapter discussing the top 20 mistakes that investors make, backed with real-life examples (these range from not using stop losses, to buying lots of penny shares and/or tipped shares).?He also lists in the book 20 quot;provenquot; investing ?techniques which range from fairly trivial examples like quot;Find something cheapquot;, to the more interesting ideas such as buying shares that have recently done a share split (he gives the example of Greggs for this) or which are moving from AIM to Main Market (quot;whenever you see an announcement that an AIM share is planning to move to the main market, it?s? probably one of the best buy signals there is!quot;). The Naked Trader is unfortunately devoid of any systematic backtesting type analysis so the only evidence for some of these ideas is frankly Robbie?s say-so but that?s not to say that they aren?t sensible ideas.

While the Naked Trader book lacks the kind of analytical rigour of, say, David Dreman?s quot;Contrarian Investment Strategiesquot;, that?s also part of its appeal. It?s written much more as a candid expose of the lessons learnt from practical trading, without any pretensions to be an academic work. As one Amazon reviewer puts it, it?s quot;free from the usual financial mumbo-jumbo jargon found in most stuffy financial booksquot;. Given the unashamedly populist/laddish tone, it?s also a book that might be read by a larger audience than most investing texts ? hopefully, that will go some way to correcting the awful national obsession with speculating on residential property,?that most unproductive asset class beloved by seemingly all Brits!

Between 2002 and 2005, Robbie Burns wrote a column for the Sunday Times, ?My DIY Pension?, featuring share buys and sells made in his pension, and apparently doubled the money from ?40,000 to ?80,000 over this period. By mid-2011 he had turned this into ?250,000. Robbie is said to have made a tax-free gain of well over ?1,000,000 from trading shares since 1999, making a profit every year, even during market downturns. His public trades ? detailed on his website ? have made to date ?978,286 (split between Share Buys: ?815,731, Spread Shorts: ?155,594 amp; Big Brother Bets: ?6,961). Without knowing for certain the initial investment amount, it?s hard to know the exact compound annual return he?s achieved but turning, say, 50,000 into 1 million over 12 years amounts to a CAGR of 27.8% which isn?t too shabby. It is worth pointing out that this is a portfolio return, which may or may not be matched by a simplified quantitative quot;Naked Trader screenquot;, especially given that there a number of qualitative criteria involved in his system that can?t really be modelled (as discussed below).

Investing Criteria

Burns declares himself against strict rules ? quot;I?m not really one for rules. I?ve always hated authority, so rules and me don?t often get alongquot;. While he does list some 30 rules of thumb in an appendix, they are mostly qualitative ones, such as quot;Understand as fully as you can everything about a company before you buy itquot;. Having said that, on page 130 of the 3rd edition, he lists a number of stock selection criteria, with the most quantitative being:

a) Dividends, profits and turnover are rising

b) It has a full listing ? quot;I tend to favour shares that have a market cap of between ?50m and ?900m because they have a lot more room for growth than, say, a FTSE 100 sharequot;.

c) It is liquid ? quot;A spread of 3% is about as much as I?ll allow. 4% maxquot;.

d) It is priced at under 15x profits to market cap

e) He also says it must look cheap, using slightly wider PE based criteria ? quot;Personally, I quite like lower P/E ratios (provided all the other signs on a share are good)? in the region of 12?20quot;.

f) The chart looks positive and is in an upward trend ? the measure here seems to be 1 year absolute strength (although he also talks about the three year profile too). He is keen on shares trending upwards and breaking new highs. quot;Don?t buy shares trending downwards and breaking new lowsquot;.

g) Debt is under three times its full-year profits: quot;My rule of thumb is not to buy anything with net debt more than three times the full-year pre tax profit, or what the likely pre-tax profit might be next yearquot;.

Let us know in the comments below if you think we?ve missed anything from a quant perspective.?

Qualitative criteria

In addition, he lists a range of other more qualitative criteria, which can?t be filtered quantitatively and could only be assessed based on a detailed analysis of the company, e.g. quot;there are no question marks, I understand what the company does, demand for its products is likely to growquot;. One other criterion ? there is still growth to come ? could potentially be quantified by referring to analyst forecasts, although given the poor forecasting record by analysts, company growth prospects are probably better assessed on a case by case basis.?He also does a quick and dirty textual analysis of the annual report to see how frequently it uses words like quot;challengingquot; or quot;difficultquot; as opposed to quot;exceeding expectationsquot; or quot;positivequot; .

How can I apply these screen criteria?

Although Robbie?s approach isn?t ideally suited to quantitative screening, we?ve done our best to replicate the key filtering criteria in order to create a Naked Trader-eque Screen. We?ll be tracking its performance shortly on Stockopedia PRO. It?s worth recognising that Burns seems sceptical about the value-added of systematic investing ? quot;If only stock market investing was that easy! Don?t waste time on magic formulas and systems? You?re better off doing your own research and developing your own investing stylequot;. It will be interesting to see how this simplified Naked Trader-eseque quant screen compares over time with his own declared returns on the website.

From the Source:

The third edition of Robbie Burns? Naked Trader is now available on Amazon. It is a quick read, packed full of ideas (some quite introductory, others far less so) and ? if you can get past the quot;alright geezerquot; tone which sometimes grates ? it is very very entertaining and educational.

Japan's exports fall for second straight month (AP)

TOKYO ? Japan's exports fell for the second straight month in November, hit by faltering demand from Asia and Europe.

Exports shrank 4.5 percent from a year earlier to 5.198 trillion yen ($66.7 billion), according to a finance ministry report released Wednesday. The result is steeper than October's 3.8 percent decline.

The data underscore the growing pressures facing the world's third-largest economy, which relies heavily on exports to drive growth. A persistently strong yen, Europe's debt problems and the recent flooding in Thailand are eroding gains made since the March earthquake in Japan disrupted manufacturing.

Economists predict economic growth will slow this quarter after the economy expanded at an annualized rate of 5.6 percent in the July-September period.

Shipments to Asia ? usually a source of robust demand ? fell 8 percent in November. Exports to the European Union and the Middle East also retreated, while those to North America rose slightly.

Goldman Sachs economist Chiwoong Lee described the falloff in shipments to Europe as "especially pronounced."

"This suggests that the deterioration in financial conditions in Europe may be having a negative impact on demand there," he said in a research note.

By sector, electrical machinery exports took a 10.7 percent hit as demand for semiconductors and audio equipment tumbled. Motor vehicles shipments slipped 0.6 percent from a year earlier.

Meanwhile, imports jumped 11.4 percent to 5.882 trillion yen as Japan bought more fossil fuels to meet electricity demand.

That resulted in a November trade deficit of 684.7 billion yen. It was the second straight monthly deficit.

The turmoil in Europe and the U.S. has driven up the yen as global investors flock to the currency as a relatively safe haven. The yen hit multiple historic highs against the dollar this year.

A rising yen shrinks the value of overseas earnings when repatriated and makes Japanese products less competitive in overseas markets. The yen has weakened to around 78 to the dollar recently, but exporters say it is still too high.

The currency levels have forced manufacturers including Nissan Motor Co. and Panasonic Corp. to shift some production overseas, a trend that could further undermine Japan's exports.

Canon imageClass MF4570dw

We don't usually review printers like the Canon imageClass MF4570dw ($299 direct) that are virtually identical to one we've already reviewed except for the addition of WiFi. We made an exception in this case primarily because the Canon imageClass MF4570dn ($299 direct originally, 4 stars) is an Editors' Choice, and we wanted to see if the MF4570dw, would be one as well. It isn't, but it comes close, and is certainly worth considering if you need a mono laser MFP for a small or home office.

First, to avoid confusion about prices, note that the dw model is the same price that the dn model was when Canon first announced it. Since then, Canon's dropped the price on the MF4570dn to $249, making it an even better value. And one way to think about the dw is that it's the same printer with WiFi added for $50 extra. However, there are some other interesting differences.

Canon is moving towards shipping all of its laser printers that include duplexing (two-sided printing) with their drivers set to duplex by default. This new approach started with the current crop of newly announced models, including the MF4570dw. Given that few people change settings for their drivers?which is why we run most of our tests using printer defaults?it's a good bet that most people will print with the default duplex setting. The best argument for this change to duplexing is that it helps make printing a little more eco-friendly, since it uses less paper. However, it also slows down print speed, and it creates at least one problem.

When you set a printer for duplex, you also have to tell it whether to want the two sides printed so you can read the document by flipping the page on its long side, like a book, or short side, like a steno pad. The default setting on the Canon driver assumes you want to flip the pages along the long side, which is fine for pages you want to print in portrait mode, but the wrong way for my tastes for pages printed in landscape mode.

I'd argue that if you are going to make duplex printing the default, you should also add separate settings for portrait and landscape modes for the direction to flip the page, and ask the user to choose the default flip settings during setup. Otherwise, odds are you'll forget to change the setting before printing with some regularity, have to reprint the document, and wind defeating the ecological benefit of having the duplex setting in the first place. So count the default duplexing as proving that Canon has good intentions, but didn't think through this particular change very well.

Basics and Setup
The MF4570dw shares the dn model's size, making it a little big to share a desk with, but reasonably compact, at 14.6 by 15.4 by 16.6 inches (HWD), and easy to find room for in the typical micro office or busy home office it's aimed at. Like the MF4570dn or the directly competitive Brother MFC-7860DW ($300 street, 3.5 stars), it can print, scan, and fax, even over a network, and work as a standalone copier and fax machine.

It also offers a 35-page automatic document feeder (ADF) for scanning multipage documents as well as legal-size pages, which are too big for the flatbed. And with a 250-sheet input tray and 1-sheet manual feed, as well as the duplexer, it offers an appropriate level of paper handling for most micro or home offices. If you need more, however, you'll have to go elsewhere, since there are no options for additional trays.

Setup is standard fare. For my tests I connected the MF4570dw to a wired network and installed the driver on a Windows Vista system.

Speed and Output Quality
Because of the default setting to duplex printing, the MF4570dw is a bit slower than the MF4570dn on our tests, but Canon rates the printer at the same 26 pages per minute (ppm) for simplex (one sided) printing, and 16 ppm for duplex.

Canon imageClass MF4570dw

On our business applications suite, (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), the printer managed an effective 9.8 ppm in its default duplex mode. Although that's slower than the MF4570dn, at 12.3 ppm, it's still reasonably fast. In fact, the printer essentially tied the MFC-7860DW, for example, at 9.7 ppm as well as the more expensive Editors' Choice Brother MFC-8480DN ($400 street, 4 stars) at 10.6 ppm. (Differences of 1 ppm or so on our tests aren't significant for lasers.) In addition, I ran the MF4570dw through the tests in simplex mode, and timed it at the same speed as the dn model.

Not surprisingly, the MF4570dw offers essentially identical output quality to the MF4570dn. Text is a touch below par for a mono laser, which is still good enough so you shouldn't have any complaints unless you need a printer for serious desktop publishing or have an unusual need for small fonts. Graphics and photo output are both par for a mono laser MFP. For graphics, that means it's easily good enough for any internal business need. For photos, it's suitable for printing Web pages with recognizable photos or printing photos in client newsletters and the like.

Much like the MF4570dn, the Canon imageClass MF4570dw offers all the features you need for a small or home office, reasonably good speed and output quality, and sufficient paper handling. And if you don't want to print in duplex, you can always change the default setting to simplex. If you don't need WiFi, the MF4570dn is obviously the better choice. If you do need it, you'll want to take a close look at the Brother MFC-8480DN as well, but the Canon imageClass MF4570dw is a more than reasonable choice and a potentially good fit for any micro or home office.

Vaclav Havel, leader of "Velvet Revolution," dies (Reuters)

PRAGUE (Reuters) ? Vaclav Havel, a dissident playwright who was jailed by Communists and then went on to lead the bloodless "Velvet Revolution" and become Czech president, died at 75 on Sunday.

The former chain smoker, who survived several operations for lung cancer and a burst intestine in the late 1990s that nearly killed him and left him frail for the rest of his life, died after a long illness.

Havel was with his wife Dagmara and a nun who had been caring for him when he died at his country home, north of Prague. "Today Vaclav Havel has left us," his secretary, Sabina Tancevova, said in a statement.

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said on Twitter, "Vaclav Havel was one of the greatest Europeans of our age. His voice for freedom paved way for a Europe whole and free."

"We will remember his commitment to freedom and democracy just as much as his great humanity," said German Chancellor Angela Merkel. "We Germans especially have much to thank him for."

The diminutive playwright, who once took Bill Clinton to a Prague jazz club and was also a friend of Mick Jagger, rose to fame by facing down Prague's communist regime when he demanded they respect at least their own human rights pledges.

Just half a year after completing his last jail sentence, he led the peaceful uprising that ended Soviet-backed rule in Prague and emerged in charge at the mediaeval Prague castle.

"I am extremely moved," an emotional Prime Minister Petr Necas told Czech Television when told of Havel's death.

"He was a symbol and the face of our republic, and he is one of the most prominent figures of the politics of the last and the start of this century. His departure is a huge loss. He still had a lot to say in political and social life."

Havel became a guarantee of peaceful transition to democracy and allowed the small country of 10 million to punch well above its weight in international politics.

"Truth and love will overcome lies and hatred," was Havel's slogan that Czechs remember from the Velvet Revolution days.

But at home, Havel lost some of his allure in the later years of his presidency.

STRUGGLE FOR THE SOUL

Much of his presidential term was cast as a struggle for the soul of democratic reforms against right-wing economist Vaclav Klaus, who replaced Havel as president in 2003.

"In the Czech Republic, he was not only a prophet recognized worldwide, but also a concrete politician who made concrete political mistakes," Havel's ex-adviser, Jiri Pehe, said.

Havel returned to writing, and published a new play, "Leaving," which won rave reviews and premiered in 2008.

When asked in a magazine interview that year if he wanted to be remembered as a politician or playwright, he said:

"I would like it to say that I was a playwright who acted as a citizen, and thanks to that he later spent a part of his life in a political position," he said.

Born in 1936, the son of a rich building contractor, Havel was denied a good education after the communists seized power in 1948 and stripped the family of its wealth.

On December 3, 1963, his first play, "Garden Party" premiered at a Prague theatre, lampooning the communist system.

Havel was barred by communist leaders from his job as a writer/editor after the suppression of the Prague Spring reforms of 1968 and he was forced to work as a manual laborer.

He became the first spokesman for the Charter 77 dissident group that strongly criticized communist officials.

Havel was sentenced in 1979 to 4-1/2 years in prison for "subversion" against the state. In 1983, he was released from prison amid immense foreign, diplomatic pressure after falling seriously ill with pneumonia.

Chosen as Czechoslovak president following the 1989 November collapse of the communist regime, he left office in 1992 ahead of the breakup of Czechoslovakia. On January 26, 1993, he was elected president of the newly-emerged and independent Czech Republic.

ESPN, NCAA extend deal through 2023-24 (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? ESPN and the NCAA have extended their TV rights deal through 2023-24, giving the network worldwide multi-media rights to 24 NCAA championships for various sports and exclusive international rights for men's basketball's "March Madness" tournament.

The new deal, which takes effect immediately, includes more than 600 hours of live telecasts across myriad ESPN platforms, from its flagship network to ESPN 3 to ESPN Deportes.

ABC News has reported that the deal is worth $500 million.

As it has before, ESPN will have exclusive coverage of the National Collegiate Athletic Association women's basketball championship and "broad" rights to the Division I football championship, and both the men's and women's College World Series.

To reach the total of 24 championships, ESPN has added seven more sports -- women's gymnastics, men's and women's fencing, Division I women's lacrosse, Division I men's and women's outdoor track, and women's bowling.

"We have enjoyed a great relationship with the NCAA that has spanned the history of ESPN," George Bodenheimer, president, ESPN and ABC Sports, and Co-Chairman, Disney Media Networks, said in a statement. "This is our most comprehensive agreement yet and ensures sports fans will have access to top-level NCAA athletics across ESPN networks and platforms."

The NCAA helped put ESPN on the map back in the 1980s with its coverage of men's college basketball. While domestic coverage of March Madness remains a joint venture between CBS and Turner with the Final Four airing on CBS, ESPN has the exclusive international rights. It also provides comprehensive coverage of the National Invitational Tournament, the second-tier year-end championship.

ESPN has "exclusive final round coverage" of everything from Division I soccer to wrestling to lacrosse. It will also air more early round coverage in several sports.

Defense bill nears passage in Congress (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A massive defense bill is on the brink of final passage after the Obama administration and Congress resolved a fierce struggle over the president's ability to prosecute terrorist suspects in the civilian justice system.

The House voted 283-136 for the $662 billion measure Wednesday night, a rare bipartisan vote the reflected the strong support for annual legislation that authorizes money for the men and women of the military as well as weapons systems and the millions of jobs they generate in lawmakers' districts.

The Senate was expected to clear the bill Thursday and send it to President Barack Obama.

The House vote came just hours after the administration abandoned a veto threat over provisions dealing with the handling of terrorism suspects.

Applying pressure on House and Senate negotiators working on the bill last week, Obama and senior members of his national security team, including Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, had sought modifications in the detainee provisions.

Negotiators announced the changes late Monday, clearing the way for White House acceptance.

In a statement, press secretary Jay Carney said the new bill "does not challenge the president's ability to collect intelligence, incapacitate dangerous terrorists and protect the American people."

Specifically, the bill would require that the military take custody of a suspect deemed to be a member of al-Qaida or its affiliates who is involved in plotting or committing attacks on the United States. There is an exemption for U.S. citizens.

House and Senate negotiators added language that says nothing in the bill will affect "existing criminal enforcement and national security authorities of the FBI or any other domestic law enforcement agency" with regard to a captured suspect "regardless of whether such ... person is held in military custody."

The bill also says the president can waive the provision based on national security.

"While we remain concerned about the uncertainty that this law will create for our counterterrorism professionals, the most recent changes give the president additional discretion in determining how the law will be implemented, consistent with our values and the rule of law, which are at the heart of our country's strength," Carney said.

Uncertainty was a major concern of FBI Director Robert Mueller, who expressed serious reservations about the detainee provisions.

Testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Mueller said a coordinated effort by the military, intelligence agencies and law enforcement has weakened al-Qaida and captured or killed many of its leaders, including Osama bin Laden and Anwar al-Awlaki, the U.S.-born radical Islamic cleric. He suggested that the divisive provision in the bipartisan defense bill would deny that flexibility and prove impractical.

"The statute lacks clarity with regard to what happens at the time of arrest. It lacks clarity with regard to what happens if we had a case in Lackawanna, N.Y., and an arrest has to be made there and there's no military within several hundred miles," Mueller said. "What happens if we have ... a case that we're investigating on three individuals, two of whom are American citizens and would not go to military custody and the third is not an American citizen and could go to military custody?"

Unnerving many conservative Republicans and liberal Democrats, the legislation also would deny suspected terrorists, even U.S. citizens seized within the nation's borders, the right to trial and subject them to indefinite detention. House Republican leaders had to tamp down a small revolt among some rank-and-file who sought to delay a vote on the bill.

Some of the Republicans were concerned that the "president would use the military to round up American citizens," said Rep. Allen West, R-Fla., a member of the Armed Services panel.

The escalating fight over whether to treat suspects as prisoners of war or criminals has divided Democrats and Republicans, the Pentagon and Congress.

The administration insists that the military, law enforcement and intelligence officials need flexibility in the campaign against terrorism. Obama points to his administration's successes in killing bin Laden and al-Awlaki. Republicans counter that their efforts are necessary to respond to an evolving, post-Sept. 11 threat and that Obama has failed to produce a consistent policy on handling terror suspects.

Highlighting a period of austerity and a winding down of decade-old conflicts, the bill is $27 billion less than Obama requested and $43 billion less than Congress gave the Pentagon. The bill also authorizes money for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and national security programs in the Energy Department.

Frustrated with delays and cost overruns with the troubled F-35 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft program, lawmakers planned to require the contractor, Lockheed Martin, to cover the expense of any extra costs on the next batch and future purchases of the aircraft. The Pentagon envisions buying 2,443 planes for the Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy, but the price could make it the most expensive program in military history ? $1 trillion.

The legislation freezes $700 million for Pakistan until the defense secretary provides Congress a report on how Islamabad is countering the threat of improvised explosive devices.

It would impose tough new penalties on Iran, targeting foreign financial institutions that do business with the country's central bank. The president could waive those penalties if he notifies Congress that it's in the interest of national security.

Adam Lambert's Trespassing To Drop In March

The delayed For Your Entertainment follow-up sees Lambert working with the likes of Dr. Luke and Bruno Mars.
By James Montgomery

Adam Lambert
Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images

He's already referred to it as his "dream" album and as "existential pop," but now we know what Adam Lambert will actually be calling his sophomore album: Trespassing.

That's according to a press release sent out by his label, RCA, which not only announced the title of Lambert's follow-up to For Your Entertainment but revealed that the much-delayed disc would finally be hitting stores on March 20. The news came one day after Lambert unveiled a snippet of the album's first single, "Better Than I Know Myself."

Lambert serves as executive producer on the new album, which he describes as "an exciting journey through the past two years of my life. It's been a transformative period and I really wanted to make music from what I've experienced. All these songs honestly explore the ups and downs of my reality."

He also co-wrote most of the record, collaborating with a (seriously) loaded roster of talented hitmakers that includes Dr. Luke, Bruno Mars, Pharrell Williams, Benny Blanco, Nile Rodgers and Claude Kelly.

And while his Glamberts will still have to wait until March to hear Trespassing, the simple fact that there's an actual release date for the album is probably good enough for now, given that for months it looked like the album might not come out at all. In November, Lambert spoke to The Advocate about the delays that had beset the project, which included some, uh, issues with RCA and a whole lot of tinkering to make his new songs right.

"I don't know how other artists do it, but for this project, I'm adopting the mentality of 'just keep writing and keep recording as much as possible,' " he said. "And then when we know that we're ready to decide which tracks are going to be on the album, we'll look at everything and narrow it down."

Senators demand answers on missing MF Global money (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Senators are demanding to know what happened to $1.2 billion in customer money that disappeared when MF Global collapsed into bankruptcy this fall. They plan to press the securities firm's top three executives Tuesday, including former Sen. Jon Corzine.

Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Debbie Stabenow says the rules about keeping customer money separate from company funds are "straightforward." She says the money's disappearance "raises very troubling questions."

The committee will question Corzine, who resigned as CEO after the firm filed for bankruptcy on Oct. 31. Also testifying will be Bradley Abelow, the firm's president and chief operating officer, and Henri Steenkamp, the chief financial officer.

All three say they don't know where the money is, according to prepared remarks. Nor do they take responsibility for authorizing the movement of money out of customer accounts.

Corzine told a House panel last week that he had overall responsibility for the firm, but he did not get involved in the mechanics of moving money around.

"I simply do not know where the money is," Corzine told the House Agriculture Committee. He makes similar remarks in his prepared testimony to the Senate panel

Depending on the circumstances, transferring money from customers' accounts could violate securities laws and, in some cases, could amount to a crime. Federal authorities have begun criminal investigations. And regulators are looking into whether the firm broke securities rules.

MF Global collapsed into the eighth-largest bankruptcy in U.S. history after a disastrous bet on European debt. Corzine stepped down as CEO on Nov. 4.

Corzine told the House panel last week that he didn't become aware of the shortfall until Oct. 30, one day before the firm filed for bankruptcy protection.

In his prepared testimony, Steenkamp says he had no direct involvement in the transfer of funds.

"Direct involvement with operational matters such as bank accounts or fund transfers has never been part of my duties," Steenkamp says.

Abelow says he cannot explain what happened to the money without having access to MF Global documents, which a trustee now controls.

"At this time ... I do not know the answers to those questions," he says in his prepared testimony.

Anthony Sabino, a law professor at St. John's University in New York, said Steenkamp and Abelow "are in a riskier position" than Corzine because they were responsible for day-to-day operations of MF Global.

Tuesday's hearing will include an added element of drama because Corzine, a former Democratic senator from New Jersey, will be pressed by some senators he served with from 2000 through 2005.

The Senate panel is one of three congressional committees to have issued subpoenas to compel Corzine's testimony on the issue. It marked the first time a former senator has been subpoenaed by his former peers in more than 100 years, according to the Senate historian's office.

Many lawmakers have heard from farmers, ranchers and small business owners in their states who are missing money that was deposited with the firm. Agricultural businesses use brokerage firms like MF Global to help reduce their risks in an industry vulnerable to swings in oil, corn and other commodity prices.

Corzine, who also was New Jersey governor from 2006 until early 2010, told lawmakers last week that he never intended to authorize the transfer of funds from customer accounts. If any subordinates moved clients' money in the belief that Corzine had authorized it, "it was a misunderstanding," he said.

Along with Corzine, Steenkamp and Abelow have been sued in class-action complaints on behalf of MF Global shareholders. The lawsuits accuse the executives of making false and misleading statements about MF Global's financial strength and cash balances.

MF Global didn't list the European debt on its balance sheet for all to see. Instead, those holdings were shifted to the company's "off-balance sheet," deep in its financial statements. Some separate filings with regulators excluded the European debt entirely.

A lawyer for the trustee overseeing the liquidation of MF Global's brokerage operations said in court Friday that the trustee's staff has discovered some "suspicious" trades in MF Global customer accounts that were made in the last days before the firm failed. The lawyer didn't provide details.

Corzine said last week that customers' losses weigh heavily on him.

"I think about this every day," he said. "I could not be more regretful, more distressed that we are ruining people's lives."

Ex-leader in court: Khmer Rouge not 'bad people' (AP)

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia ? The No. 2 leader of Cambodia's brutal Khmer Rouge regime told a court he and his comrades were not "bad people," denying responsibility Monday for the deaths of an estimated 1.7 million Cambodians during their 1970s rule.

Nuon Chea's defiant statements came as the U.N.-backed tribunal began questioning him for the first time since the long-awaited trial of three top regime leaders began late last month. Nuon Chea and two other Khmer Rouge leaders are accused of crimes against humanity, genocide, religious persecution, homicide and torture stemming from the group's 1975-79 reign of terror. All have denied wrongdoing.

The trusted deputy of the late Pol Pot, Nuon Chea blamed neighboring Vietnam for the atrocities that occurred, reiterating long-standing Khmer Rouge's claims that the mass graves discovered subsequently were of people killed by Vietnamese armed forces.

This week the court is expected to focus on charges involving the forced movement of people and crimes against humanity. After the Khmer Rouge captured Phnom Penh on April 17, 1975, they began moving an estimated 1 million people ? even hospital patients ? from the capital into the countryside in an effort to create a communist agrarian utopia.

After a court clerk read a background of the Khmer Rouge and the three defendants, Nuon Chea defended the notoriously brutal movement.

"I don't want the next generation to misunderstand history. I don't want them to believe the Khmer Rouge are bad people, are criminals," Nuon Chea said. "Nothing is true about that."

The 85-year-old one-time chief ideologist for the communist movement insisted that no Cambodian was responsible for atrocities during the Khmer Rouge's reign.

"These war crimes and crimes against humanity were not committed by the Cambodian people," Nuon Chea said. "It was the Vietnamese who killed Cambodians."

Vietnam, whose border suffered bloody attacks by Khmer Rouge soldiers, sponsored a resistance movement and invaded, toppling the Khmer Rouge in 1979 and installing a client regime.

When a judge asked about the background of Khmer Rouge party, Nuon Chea said it had been set up to liberate the country from the rich and powerful.

Later, Nuon Chea twice asked the court to adjourn early, complaining of heart problems and breathlessness. Judge Nil Nonn then adjourned proceedings until Tuesday.

The other defendants are Khieu Samphan, an 80-year-old former head of state who also told the court in November he bore no responsibility for atrocities, and 86-year-old Ieng Sary, who has said he will not participate in the trial until a ruling is issued on a pardon he received in 1996. The tribunal previously ruled the pardon does not cover its indictment against him.

There is concern that the accused could pass away before justice is achieved.

Pol Pot died in 1998 in Cambodia's jungles, and a fourth defendant, 79-year-old Ieng Thirith, was ruled unfit to stand trial because she has Alzheimer's disease. She is Ieng Sary's wife and was the regime's minister for social affairs.

The tribunal is seeking justice on behalf of the estimated quarter of Cambodia's population who died from executions, starvation, disease and overwork under the Khmer Rouge.

"This is the first time the accused persons will be asked questions in a public hearing about their role in the events that led to the takeover of Phnom Penh on 17 April 1975 and about the policies of the Khmer Rouge," tribunal spokesman Lars Olsen told The Associated Press.

Olsen said the initial testimony will take several days. After the accused have been questioned, witnesses and civil parties will be also called to testify, he said.

So far the U.N.-backed tribunal, established in 2006, has tried just one case, convicting Kaing Guek Eav, the former head of the Khmer Rouge's notorious S-21 prison, last year and sentencing him to 35 years in prison for war crimes, crimes against humanity and other offenses. His sentence was reduced to 19 years due to time served and other technicalities.

That case was seen as much simpler than those currently before the court, in part because Kaing Guek Eav confessed to his crimes.

Chum Mey, 80, one of only two survivors of the S-21 prison, said he doesn't believe the three defendants will tell the truth about what happened in the 1970s.

"During last month's sessions we heard them say only that their regime was good and worked for the entire people," Chum Mey said.

Quirky obituary endears Conn. prof to new audience (AP)

HARTFORD, Conn. ? Robert Spiegel's passion for Russian literature, the New York Mets, ethnic cooking and beagles endeared him to generations of students and colleagues at Central Connecticut State University. Now, through the power of social media, the 77-year-old former English professor's obituary is charming strangers, as well.

Spiegel, a resident of the Hartford suburb of Berlin and a native of New York City, died Wednesday after a struggle with cardiac disease and dementia. He was eulogized in a quirky obituary written by his son that appeared Friday in central Connecticut newspapers.

It quickly started spreading on strangers' Facebook pages and Twitter feeds, usually accompanied by the readers' admissions they did not know him ? but wished they had, based on the richly detailed obituary.

"Whereas the disease did thankfully erase most memories of the `62 Mets season, it eventually also claimed his life," his obituary read, referring to his beloved team's 40-120 record in a year that took 10 games just to get their first win.

Friends and family say the obituary and its response are a fitting coda for the life of a man who loved spurring conversation, whether it was about good writing, New York sports teams or the satisfaction of sipping a high-quality single malt Scotch whiskey.

"He was a very humble man, and reaching some level of postmortem fame would really please him. I'm sure he would have been delighted by it, and surprised," said Kevin Lynch, a fellow English professor emeritus at Central Connecticut who worked with Spiegel for 32 years.

Spiegel was a high school teacher in Brooklyn before joining Central Connecticut State's faculty in 1965. He was accompanied on his move by his wife, Ursula, whom he'd met on a blind date under New York City's Washington Square arch.

He quickly took on a reputation at Central Connecticut as a teacher who could leave a roomful of students entranced by anything from Dostoyevsky to the literature of baseball ? something his obituary called "a thinly veiled therapy to alleviate the trauma he sustained from coaching arguably the worst Little League team in recorded (or unrecorded) history and from the sufferings he endured from 40 years as a devout Mets fan."

Such lines in his obituary were what caught the eye of many strangers Friday, some of whom pondered in Facebook postings whether Spiegel had written the death notice himself.

Though his family would have liked that, they said, the progress of his dementia made it impossible. Instead, it was written by his son, Jeff, who described himself in the obituary as someone "who, if nothing else to show from his lineage, inherited his father's sardonic sense of humor."

The unusual obituary also gave readers a window into the effects of the dementia that first became evident when it stole Robert Spiegel's ability to read, then continued creeping onward as caretakers helped his wife keep him in their home until his hospitalization late last week.

Spiegel's obituary was so untraditional that family members and the funeral home traded calls back and forth Thursday as the directors wanted to double check that yes, indeed, the Spiegels wanted it to appear exactly that way.

"Robert Spiegel of Kensington was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on May 2, 1934, lived and subsequently died," the opening line reads. "Most of his noteworthy accomplishments happened in said middle part."

The obituary described the dayslong vigil at his hospital bed before his death amid what his son described as lively conversation against a backdrop of the music of Jimmy Buffett and Bob Marley, "chicken curry and the occasional smuggled glass of Glenlivet."

And true to his love of Russian literature, the password for callers seeking information at the hospital about his condition was "Vanya," an ode to the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov ? a detail his family is sure he would have loved.

As his dementia progressed in recent years, Spiegel sat down one day with his wife, and they wrote a list of things to remember for his eventual memorial service: their daughter should read some Emily Dickinson poetry aloud, the dress code should be strictly casual, and they should dab his favorite Drakkar Noir cologne on his body after the traditional washing under their Jewish faith.

When Ursula Spiegel got out that list again this week, she found a few words added on the back in her husband's handwriting: "Glenlivet and spicy food."

That single malt Scotch whiskey, spicy food and other items that invoke Spiegel's personality are expected to be part of a memorial service next spring at Central Connecticut State University. The date had not been set as of Friday, and his funeral services this week were private.

In addition to his wife and son, Spiegel is survived by a daughter, three grandchildren and several other family members. According to the obituary, he was also predeceased by his "bevy of beagles, all eternally loyal to their benevolent master, if not lacking a tad in their own intellect."

Ursula Spiegel said she and others in the family were surprised and pleased that her husband's obituary had struck a chord with strangers, and that he was bringing a smile to them even after his death.

"Thank God Jeff has inherited his humor," she said. "He wrote it exactly the way Bob would have written it himself."

Meanwhile, light to moderate snow showers with periods of heavy snowfall and windy weather conditions occur from Montana through the Northern Plains, ahead of a Canadian cold front dropping down from southern Canada. Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for these regions through the evening. Snow accumulations for today are expected to range from 6 to 12 inches above 5,000 feet and 3 to 6 inches at lower elevations in the Northern Rockies. Snow Accumulations in the Northern Plains will range from 1 to 3 inches in the southwest and between 3 and 5 inches in the northwest. (AP Photo/Weather Underground)

A significant wind event will continue across California and the Great Basin, while snow will persist from the central Plains to central Great Basin. A cold front will trigger more snow showers to the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes.

(AP) ? The most powerful winds to tear across California in years kept 9-year-old Dalen Guyton up late into the night. Then, around midnight, came the boom.

The great yawning tree that stood next to his grandmother's house, the one with the rope swing he and his sisters played on, had toppled, coming within inches of their one-story home.

On Thursday, the siblings stood out front surveying the damage, like thousands across the West where high winds toppled countless trees, knocked out power to hundreds of thousands and brought gusts of 123 mph.

"If she pays someone to clean it up, it's not going to be a good Christmas," said the boy, who was wearing a Santa hat. "She's not going to be able to get any presents."

The National Weather Service called Southern California's winds Wednesday night a once-in-a-decade event, and it's not over. Winds were expected to pick up again Thursday night, though they won't be as fierce.

In the mountains, winds were expected to gust up to 65 mph into Friday morning and 50 mph in the valleys.

High wind warnings and advisories were also issued for Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, Arizona and New Mexico. The blustery weather is expected to eventually hit Oklahoma, Missouri and Indiana.

The storms were the result of a dramatic difference in pressure between a strong, high-pressure system and a cold, low-pressure system, meteorologists said. This funnels strong winds down mountain canyons and slopes.

The winds reached 123 mph at a ski resort northwest of Denver and topped 102 mph in Utah.

California, however, was the hardest hit, with more than 330,000 utility customers still without power late Thursday. The gusts were blamed for toppling semitrailers and causing trees to fall on homes, apartment complexes and cars.

A state of emergency was declared in Los Angeles County, where schools in a dozen communities were closed.

In some neighborhoods, concrete light poles cracked in half. Darkened traffic signals and fallen palm tree fronds and branches snarled traffic. At a Shell station, the roof collapsed into a heap of twisted metal.

"It was a terrifying ride for me, coming here in pitch dark ... and watching motorists take no notice of lights being out," said Bob Spencer, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works.

The last time that Southern California was battered by such intense winds was in January 2007, when similarly high gusts toppled trees and made a mess.

Bill Patzert, a climate expert with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, lives in Sierra Madre and, like hundreds of thousands of people across the region, lost power at his home. A heavy tree limb blocked his driveway.

He estimated winds peaked between 80 to 90 mph in his neighborhood overnight.

"It was like being in a hurricane. I thought I was going to blow away," he said.

In heavily damaged Pasadena, schools and libraries closed and a local emergency, the first since 2004, was declared. Officials said 40 people were evacuated from an apartment building after a tree smashed part of the roof.

Pasadena is known for its historic homes and wide oak-lined streets that are frequently depicted in films.

Many residents Thursday blamed the city for protecting its old trees from over-trimming to such an extent that they have now become a public safety hazard.

Vince Mehrabian, the general manager at A&B Motor Cars, estimated eight Lexus, Cadillac and other luxury cars had been destroyed by fallen limbs. He said he'd been asking the city for four years to trim the trees more.

On a street around the corner, almost every tree was either cracked in half or missing limbs.

Elsewhere, Daphne Bell, a 30-year Pasadena resident, said she was kept awake by howling wind. "This is the worst, the absolute worst. There were times it sounded like a freight train was roaring down my driveway," she said.

Similar stories of downed trees and power lines echoed across the West, where winds in some areas ripped storefront awnings, filled gutters with debris and forced school closures.

High winds ripped through Utah, overturning several semi-trucks on or near Interstate 15, and 54,000 customers were without power along the state's 120-mile Wasatch Front as high winds took down power lines.

Police asked schools to close in Centerville, where a 102-mph gust was reported. Mail delivery and trash pickup were canceled.

In Nevada, weather officials warned that blowing dust was creating visibility problems on a highway between Reno and Las Vegas.

In Steamboat Springs, Colo., the roof of a four-story condominium complex was blown off and about 100 trees were knocked over, some landing on homes. A ski area shut down its lifts after a gust of 123 mph.

Even some weather experts were surprised by the wind's force.

"It's one of the strongest events that I can remember," said Brian Edwards, a meteorologist with Accuweather. "It's rather rare."
