Family Paws Parent Education hits Tampa Bay | Amy Weeks

Family Paws Parent Education is an international program created to help prepare families with dogs for life with babies and toddlers. I am proud to be a new presenter for the program and to be able to offer it to the Tampa community.? Every year we are exposed to heartbreaking? stories of children who have been bitten by the family dog.? Many of these bites may have been avoided with a little foresight, planning and management.? Through Family Paws Parent Education and the ?Dog & Storks? and ?Baby and Dog Connection? presentations and information,? parents have access to information on ?reading dog?s signs of stress?, ?proper management?, ?great ways to introduce the baby and dog?, ?do?s and don?ts? and ?bite prevention?.

Over the next few months, I will discuss ways to create a safer environment in households with babies, toddlers and the family dog. This week?s suggestion is to create ?safety zones? for pets in your household.? ?Safety Zones? are secure areas where you can separate your dog from your baby or toddler.? Consider using a crate or sectioning off a room with a baby gate for your pet.? Make certain that the baby gate is secure and that your toddler isn?t able to open it. These zones should be used throughout the day should you need to give your dog a ?break? from the baby or anytime you are not able to provide full active attention on both your pet and your child. It is vital that parents of babies and young children are proactive when it comes to safety. Setting up these ?secure zones? is an easy way to bring peace of mind when trying to multitask at home.? A safe home is the first step to successful cohabitation of pet and child.
